Dietetics

I thought that maybe I should introduce my major a little bit. I know that I have told you all that I am in the dietetics major here at BYU and let me tell you, it has been so good. I have loved it. Yes, there have been moments when I want to throw in the towel and just go live in a card board box. We all have those moments, don't we? I hope so!
The thing I love about dietetics is the people that I am studying it with. There are only 25 people in my year. We have all the same classes together and it's like having 23 sisters and 1 brother. It's been a blast.
The classes are hard, but they are so interesting. I am currently taking clinical nutritional therapy, foodservice management and lab, pathophysiology, and some other classes that aren't nutrition related. My lab is working in the Pendulum Court cafe on campus. It is such a fun class. We basically cook all day and serve it to people. My cooking skills have definitely increased, I just need to apply it into my home now.
Our uniforms are adorable at Pen Court. Don't I look attractive ;)

Our assignments are really interesting. They are hard, but I like them because they are applicable to the work force. We got to analyze another person's diet and counsel them on what they should be eating. I got to do a mock diet interview and counsel someone on healthy eating. I learned about medications and the reactions that they have with food. And now we are learning about diabetes and the subsequent diets that come with that. Currently, we have to plan 6 different diets that need to be followed by people who have type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It's hard because we have to count all of the carbohydrates and make sure that they are getting the correct amount of nutrients needed. The other half to this assignment, is that I have to follow a diabetic diet. It is so hard. The hardest part having to plan the entire day around so few carbs. I have a greater respect for those with diabetes and I hope to help make life a little easier for them by helping plan diabetic diets.

The other opportunity I have had this semester is being on a research group. I didn't realize I have such a passion for research. I really want to make that a main part of my career after I graduate. We are studying effects of obesity and it is so cool! I love being able to ask questions and then perform a study that will help to solve those questions.

That's it for now. I love dietetics and can't wait to learn more. Hopefully I will post more pictures of my diabetic diet so you can all see what it's like to eat when you have diabetes.

Love,

Rach
